History
In medieval Europe, some French manors and noble families engaged private attendant to provide “personal, noble, and circumspective” service, thus creating the vocation of butler. In French language, butler is “bouteiller”. At that time, only British and French royal family or noble family was qualified to engage butler. No matter how rich a normal family was, it wasn’t permitted to engage butler. As the symbol of luxury, and with a history of 600-700 years in Europe, “butler” almost becomes a classic noun in housekeeping field. In fact, British butler was originated from France. Since the service was improved in the Britain, and was marked with obvious British characteristics, it was preceded with “British”, and later was spread to US and Germany, etc.
Starched white shirt, black or white waist, black tie, black tailcoat, well-ironed black trousers, shiny black leather shoes, tidy hair, and forever straight back, these are standard guise of a British butler. The image has stricken root in the hearts of people.
